The Brenda Photo Challenge - "Red"

"Red" is this weeks Photo Challenge! Every Christmas, we put this Toy Soldier out as part of our decorations. I made him when my boys were little, at least 16 years ago. He's held up pretty well, although we've had to re-glue the nose and lapels a couple of times.

Tuesday it was 64 degrees here. Today... Freezing Cold, Huge Hail, Lightening, then the Snow...
so, I had to snap this picture with the Bright Red Fire Hydrant!

I love the bright red against the snow and ice!

The Brenda Photo Challenge - Frozen

The snow went away before this challenge came up, but fortunately (well, not so much for drivers) we had freezing rain last night... Monday, the 24th! I took these shots before the sun removed the frostiness from my little world.

I know we're only supposed to post three pictures, so you can skip these if you like... I was having fun playing with the editing of photos, so I wanted to show a before and after. I have a lot more to learn, but "tweeking" photos is a lot of fun!

This is my submission for this challenge. Sorry for the delay. A family situation prevented me from even thinking about the it until today. Anyway...

This is a photo I took of my son, Lucky 13, and his friend S.B. at church camp. I had just discovered them pouring dirt over each other and themselves. S.B. looks a bit more remorseful than my little guy! They were having a grand time till I showed up!

I'll have to catch up with everyone else's photos tomorrow!

The Brenda Photo Challenge - Weathered & Worn

This is a rusty old hand cart that sits in my garden.

I've been planning to paint it, but just never got around to it.

I think it would look pretty with red geraniums planted in it.

I love these old weathered milk cans!

They are actually more faded than in the photo.

I adjusted the brightness and contrast to make

them more visible on my computer screen.

The Brenda Photo Challenge - Lighting

I struggled a bit with this category, but finally came up with a couple of shots that I like:

This first one is of my Mock Orange Bush.

I love the white flowers against the pink of the Crab Apple Tree.

I was trying to get it in bright sunlight, with dark contrasting shadows.

In this next photo I played with the lighting feature in Photoshop.

It's not my favorite, but I thought it was an interesting finish.

The final picture is a closeup of the Mock Orange.

It's very pretty when in bloom, which is a very short time,

and the flowers have the most beautiful fragrance.

I loved the way the sunlight was hitting the flowers.

Brenda Photo Challenge - Black & White

Here are my efforts at Black &White photography. Had some difficulty as I did not use B&W film. Converting the digital color image did not seem to make the same type of contrast that you see with film.
The first image is a metal toad. He keeps guard over my garden.

Next, a messy cluster of tulips. My front garden needs some attention!

Finally, two of my dolls. The larger is one I made years ago in a porcelain doll making class, the smaller is a vintage baby doll.

Brenda Photo Challenge - Macro Fruit

Well here they are... a bit of a challenge with my little "point and shoot" camera, but it was fun! The first picture I played with the image and added a watercolor effect. It's my favorite.

Here is the original shot of the lemon...

Below are two images of the same orange. I couldn't get a very sharp image, but it was fun playing with it.

Now I want a better camera even more! Maybe my son will loan me his... lol!

Looking back over this past year, I found that I took very few photographs. It was a year of challenges. The Best of 2009 is what remains constant year after year... it was my love of family, home, and simple pleasures. Here are a couple photos that represent family and simple pleasures. You can see them better if you click on them. The quality is not so good, but I love the family shot. Used the timer and set the camera on top of the car...

This is Muska. She was such a beauty. I miss her a lot.

This is my sis and Tippy. Tippytoes was a loving, lap cat... or a sit "as close as you can get" cat. She loved playing with our hair. She "talked" a lot. Winter Memories...

Brrrr! We really got some winter this year. After having temperatures in the 80's the past couple of days, I enjoyed seeing these pics that PJ just got developed. Even though it was fun having some snow this past winter season, I am really enjoying the warmer weather.

Here are a couple of very old, nearly vintage photos, from the 70's! It's after a Harvest Party. The top one is me... without my clown makeup (which was making my face burn). Mom had just repapered her bathroom, added new curtains, and forced me to model. She loved redecorating! I'm wearing Grandpa's work pants and shirt. Had to add suspenders to keep the pants up! Oh, those were the days... and I thought I was fat!

This is my cousin... she went as an old man so naturally we had to have a shot of her in the men's room! This was in the basement of our church... we always got in so much trouble together. She just had a birthday this past week, so this is my little "card" to her! And, she thought she was fat too! I know I'd love to revisit that size again! Anyway,

Brenda Photo Challenge - "Old"

I'm still without a camera, so I went into my photo "archives" again. The first two images were taken up near Riggins, Idaho. It's beautiful country up there!

Old, very tall tree against a cloudy sky...

What's left of a tree, still standing tall against the sky.

Don't know whether it was damaged by fire, disease

or something else, but I think it is beautiful.

This is near where I grew up. It used to be all farms. This photo is what's left of the old barn. You can see a parking lot to the new park in the background. Also, a subdivision across the street.

Today the barn has totally disappeared as many of our farms, and farmland, have in this area. The one really wonderful thing is the park is the first one in our area that was planned to be accessible to children with disabilities.

Remembrance...

This week would have been Grandma and Grandpa's Anniversary. Here are a couple pictures that were taken a few years back at their 70th. The picture on the cake is their wedding photo. The other is at a special family dinner to celebrate the day.

The cake was beautiful. The photo came out so clear.

I dreamed about Grandpa last night. I don't often do that, or if I do I don't remember. It just made me more aware of how much I miss him. I know Grandma really misses him. She lets me know each time I visit her. She just doesn't remember that he's passed on. I never imagined how hard getting old could be. Somebody said "getting old is not for sissies..." and I have to say, they're right. It can be wonderful and hard all at the same time.

Odd Assortment

I finally uploaded some of my cell phone pictures. Since my camera died, I haven't been able to take pictures. I wanted to see how well these would turn out. They are small in size and not as sharp, but not bad. It will do temporarily until I can afford to replace the camera.

This is the Idanha Hotel in Boise, Idaho. My husband surprised me a "few" years ago by reserving a corner turret room for my 40th birthday. It was wonderful! Furnished with antiques, even an old clawfoot tub. The room had a little table and chairs, in the turret, where we had dinner. The view of the city street at night was beautiful. They no longer use this as a hotel, so I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to stay there. The photo below was taken by my husband during an Old Car Cruise.

This is a photo of a dogwood tree in the front yard where my grandparents used to live. I took it sometime last summer. I love the bright white flowers against the grey cloudy sky. Makes me think of hope. If hope were a color, wouldn't it be white?

I wanted to say a quick "Thank You" for all the wonderful comments that have been left for me.

Also, I wanted to leave you with this picture my husband took. It's a lake he, and a friend, hiked into this summer. It's above McCall, Idaho. I've forgotten the name... I'll ask him later and then post it for you. I'd like to be sitting on that rock, with a nice hot cup of coffee, enjoying the view!

I may be scarce for the next several days as I am getting ready for a huge church rummage sale! My garage is calling me.

PJ's Old Blue 52...

My husband has a passion for old cars. A few years ago, PJ bought an old, sad looking 1952 Chevy. Last winter a friend, who used to paint cars professionally, offered to do the painting for free! Yay! PJ just had to pay for paint and help with the sanding and other prep work.

Now PJ has the beautiful, blue '52 he's always wanted (except for dropping in a new engine... or the AC that I'd love). There's always more you can do for an old treasure like this.

who I've been asking prayer for.

She is making great improvements,

but stroke recovery does take time.

These are some pictures of PJ's side of the family. I am gradually getting some of my photos scanned back onto my computer. It's a great lesson in backing up files! It takes a long time to scan photos and it's worth the extra time to copy them to a disc. Hope you enjoy looking!
